Brentwood Park was established and promoted as “a retreat from a rapidly growing city” and has evolved into one of the most desirable neighborhoods in Southern California. The words that the Western Pacific Development Company used to promote the development in a 1907 ad in the Los Angeles Times read, “To live in Brentwood Park means to have the conveniences of city life brought to the doors of your country estate …. Mail and fresh eggs are brought to your home twice each day. Garbage is removed three times a week. Streetlights twinkle at night. There is a kindergarten in the Park and an autobus takes children to and from grammar school and Sunday school.”

Although priorities and eye to lifestyle has changed a bit in the last 114 years, some things remain unchanged: ample setbacks and mass planting of trees. Continued support of deed restrictions has ensured the preservation of this oasis-setting within the middle of one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world.

Fast-forward to 1948, when William Brand reviewed the property plats of a new development off San Vicente Blvd. Family legend reveals that although the family patriarch had the option and means to purchase the double street-to-street lot, he was NOT interested in mowing so much lawn. He did, however, purchase the largest lot on the plat at 30,471 square feet.

He passed down this legacy to his son who, in turn, raised his family in this home, which has remained in the original family since 1948.
